As an aside and away from my normal training and diet work, I have been doing some research on alcohol for a Daily Mail article – if you are still drinking you are massively retarding any progress you’d like to make in your fitness regime. Ignoring the hormonal implications, if you drink a half bottle of vodka then thats over 1000 calories to burn off before your body starts mobilising anymore body fat for energy. So I would see every drinking session as one less training session in the positive bank.
I am constantly confounded by the low levels of knowledge that so many of my personal training clients have about the effects of alcohol on the mobilising of fat stores.
Sure, most people are aware that alcohol isn’t “good” (how vague is that!) and that beer will add calories. But because you can drink vodka on the Atkins diet i have heard some conject that it can’t be such a bad thing. I beg to differ.
Your take home lesson should always be that alcohol and fat loss do not mix.
Of course a small glass of red wine is more than OK, but that is a different story entirely.
