A Sense of Perspective

View Comments

As some of you will know I am currently on vacation in sunny St Lucia. It is my first break from personal training in three years and I am feeling an amazing benefit for it. I am still getting a few hours work done every day, training more often, and sleeping only an hour or so a day more than usual but the changes in my energy levels are quite staggering. The reasons for this are fairly obvious but need stating nonetheless:

1) Fresh air. For those of us who live in big built up cities like London or New York the need for fresh clean air is something that I feel cannot be overstated. I have been running on the beach sucking in great lungfuls of Caribbean air and have never felt so invigorated.

2) Genuinely fresh food. Although the food here is not quite the organic dream that I had hoped it would be with much of standard supermarket fare shipped over from the United States, there are some exceptions. I have been gorging myself on fresh fruit and probably eaten more coconut in the last few days than ever in my entire life previously. Much fallacious controversy surrounds the coconut. Idiotic dietitians (as distinguished from decent clinical nutritionists) will argue that the coconut has too much saturated fat. What rot. The coconut is full of great nutrition and the fat content which is high is predominantly made up of MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) which the body uses preferentially for energy and has a very hard time storing as body fat. It also contains a nutrient known as “lauric acid” that is highly anti microbial and fabulous for dealing with all sorts of very common, and hidden, stomach issues. And moreover truly fresh coconut just tastes plain delicious. My son is even feeding me some as I write this very sentence!

3) A sense of perspective. I am more guilty than the next person of being caught up in the rat race. London life especially does that to you with the constant self imposed pressure to be the best. Getting time away with family / friends / even by yourself (there is a lot to be said for that too) restores a sense of perspective about what is important in life. It truly is all about the journey and not the destination and the only thing to focus on is enjoying what life throws at you. It won’t always be great or fun, but perspective is the thing to maintain. And a focus on what is important in life. For me it is all about my son, Roman. What is the most important thing in your life?
