Those of you who know me will be aware that I was recently blessed with the birth of my son, Roman. The following article helps to reaffirm my decision to load up Marci with DHA, especially as our baby boy seems to be super alert and active already! Whilst I am on this subject thanks must also go to Charles Poliquin who took the time to set out a few pregnancy and post pregnancy nutritional and supplement protocols for us.

By Michael Byrd

Brain development can determine the quality of our entire life.

Human brain development begins while we are still in the womb of our Moms. It is then the responsibility of our mothers to see to it that she gets enough nutrients during pregnancy.

Want to know why? This is because an infant’s brain starts to develop even as a fetus, thus it is important that it is provided with important oils ? omega 3 fatty acids with DHA in particular.

The Moment Brain Development Takes Place

The brain of an infant develops as early as 4 weeks from the time of conception. It is good to have a solid foundation even before a woman gets pregnant to ensure that a woman has enough omega 3 fatty acids with DHA during pregnancy.

Several scientists now agree that DHA consumption is vital in brain development and it is what sets us apart from our prehistoric ancestors. It is then right to assume that back on those days, the brain of our ancestors were developed with the aid of the DHA that they added to their diets.

You are then given the idea why omega 3 oils with DHA are important for brain development.

Deteriorating brain function was also noticed amongst our ancestors who did not have enough DHA in their diets. However, as they moved to the coastal areas, and were able to eat enough fish, there was a notable increase in their brain capacity.

Scientists doubt if Homo Sapiens (yes that’s us) would have evolved without adding DHA from fish oils to their diets. [Lipids, Vol. 34:s39-s47]

What can a Bigger Brain Do For Us

The bigger our brain, the better we learn, communicate, rationalize and do all the wonderful things around us.

Brain development starts during the 25th to 28th week of pregnancy. During this stage, the baby’s brain and nervous system takes control on some of its body functions. But there should be more growth left 12 weeks before full term pregnancy.

To ensure that a baby reaches full term, omega 3 fatty acids is needed. It is also needed for the continuous development of the baby’s brain and nervous system.

It may be humorous that we have to thank the fishes in the ocean for saving us from living like apes. We should be thankful to our ancestors for discovering that we can make a delicious meal out of the fishes in the ocean.

Insufficient Omega 3 Fish Oil

A research from the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition in London, blames DHA deficiency during pregnancy as the reason for underweight babies.

Since brain development disorders can be lasting, mothers are advised to get into a diet that has abundant amount of omega 3 oils with DHA. Eating lots of fatty fish and taking supplements of high and pure quality fish oil capsules can suffice these needs. [AJCN, Vol. 57, 703s-709s]

Moms should see that it is necessary to have a daily dose of omega 3 fish oil to ensure optimum brain development of her baby. This is her assurance of having a smart and healthy baby.

Take a look at great picture of healthy pregnancy stages, got to human pregnancy week by week.

As part of my Men’s Health supplement column I often have to write short briefs on a variety of supplements. My April 2009 piece on Omega 3 fish oil supplementation is possibly my most important due to the critical role that omega 3s should play in the overall metabolic process. Yes, they can significantly aid both fat loss and muscle building, but are also supremely beneficial to overall health and longevity too.

I won’t spoil the surprise and give away all the details here – you can go visit our main personal training website for that and read the Omega 3 supplementation article itself. Suffice to say that if I could take just one supplement onto a desert island with me it would be fish oil / omega 3s every single time.

Incidentally, I would also take the Poliquin brand as far, far too many of my personal training clients notice a huge difference between the quality of the Poliquin brand and regular store bought products.

Balancing your fat intake is something I continually stress to all of our personal training clients. The ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 (simplistically viewed as arachadonic acid) fats in the average modern diet (“average” always equals sub optimal cr*p) is terrible. Estimates have it that our Paleolithic ancestors ate a 1:3 to 1:6 onega 3: omega 6 diet. I have read studies that have that now at 1:1000 omega3:omega 6. No wonder people are dying in ever increasing numbers from environmental diseases!

Its not too hard to sort your diet out either – eat organic meat, nuts and eggs (grass fed animals produce far more omega 3s than their grain fed counterparts) and supplement with a GOOD QUALITY (not a cheap supermarket own brand!) omega 3 product.

The following article should make you sit up and take notice:

Fatty acids clue to Alzheimer’s Brain

Scientists want to know more about the brain changes that lead to Alzheimer’s

Controlling the level of a fatty acid in the brain could help treat Alzheimer’s disease, an American study has suggested.

Tests on mice showed that reducing excess levels of the acid lessened animals’ memory problems and behavioural changes.

Writing in Nature Neuroscience, the team said fatty acid levels could be controlled through diet or drugs.

A UK Alzheimer’s expert called the work “robust and exciting”.

There are currently 700,000 people living with dementia in the UK, but that number is forecast to double within a generation.

Scientists from Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease and the University of California looked at fatty acids in the brains of normal mice and compared them with those in mice genetically engineered to have an Alzheimer’s-like condition.

They identified raised levels of a fatty acid called arachidonic acid in the brains of the Alzheimer’s mice.

This is cause for cautious optimism, as fatty acid levels can be controlled to some extent by diet and drugs
Rebecca Wood, Alzheimer’s Research Trust

Its release is controlled by the PLA2 enzyme.

The scientists again used genetic engineering to lower PLA2 levels in the animals, and found that even a partial reduction halted memory deterioration and other impairments.

Dr Rene Sanchez-Mejia, who worked on the study, said: “The most striking change we discovered in the Alzheimer’s mice was an increase in arachidonic acid and related metabolites [products] in the hippocampus, a memory centre that is affected early and severely by Alzheimer’s disease.”

He suggested too much arachidonic acid might over-stimulate brain cells, and that lowering levels allowed them to function normally.

Dr Lennart Mucke, who led the research, added: “In general, fatty acid levels can be regulated by diet or drugs.

“Our results have important therapeutic implications because they suggest that inhibition of PLA2 activity might help prevent neurological impairments in Alzheimer’s disease.
